JEFF KANE, M.D.
My medical practice is unique in that I don’t examine or diagnose or treat anyone. The past thirty-five years I’ve simply listened to patients and their families.
I facilitate cancer support groups. I founded the support programs at Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento and at Sierra Nevada Cancer Center in Grass Valley, CA.
Apparently there’s truth in poet William Blake’s pronouncement, “If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise.” Having listened carefully to thousands of stories, I believe I’ve learned something about suffering and its treatment.
Every instance of illness includes two profiles, the physical and the emotional. Cancer, for example, is unchecked cell growth and also, inevitably, emotional turmoil. Standard medical practice is good at treating tumors but woefully inadequate at treating anxiety, fear, anger, loneliness, and confusion.
I wrote a book about squeezing a bit of wisdom out of sickness (Be Sick Well, New Harbinger, 1991) and one about compassionate caregiving (How to Heal, Helios, 2003). Healing Healthcare addresses our sick system itself.
